Forward Controls Design ACF Ambidextrous Charging Handle (5.56)
The Forward Controls Design ACF (Ambidextrous Charging Handle) is a premium charging handle engineered specifically for duty, defensive, and hard-use AR-15 rifles. Developed over several years, the ACF focuses on two primary objectives: creating a charging handle capable of surviving repeated hard use—including mortaring—and significantly reducing gas and debris directed toward the shooter's face when running a suppressor.
Rather than reinventing the charging handle, Forward Controls Design refined the proven mil-spec design, improving durability and ergonomics while preserving the strengths of Eugene Stoner's original concept.

Designed for Hard Use
The ACF was engineered with durability as its highest priority.
Forward Controls Design retained the fixed T-handle architecture of the original mil-spec charging handle because it remains one of the strongest designs available. Instead of relying on oversized latch wings or unnecessary leverage, the ACF maintains a compact profile that encourages pulling straight to the rear, reducing stress on both the charging handle and upper receiver.
The result is a charging handle built to withstand years of aggressive manipulation, including repeated mortaring when necessary.
Constant Motion Latch System
One of the ACF's defining features is its Constant Motion latch design.
Unlike many ambidextrous charging handles that abruptly stop when fully depressed, the ACF's latches continue moving inward under impact. This prevents the latch from bottoming out against the body of the charging handle during hard manipulations, reducing stress around the pivot pins and greatly increasing long-term durability.
Combined with precision-machined solid steel pins and reinforced pin pockets, the ACF is built to handle abuse that would shorten the lifespan of many competing designs.
Optimized for Suppressed Rifles
Suppressor users will appreciate the ACF's enhanced gas management.
The charging handle incorporates an enlarged, horseshoe-shaped gas deflection fence that extends above the upper receiver, helping redirect excess gas away from the shooter's face. While no charging handle can completely eliminate suppressor blowback, the ACF noticeably reduces gas exposure during extended suppressed shooting.
Ergonomic by Design
Rather than using oversized latch wings, the ACF employs a taller charging handle body with aggressive serrations on both the front and rear.
This provides plenty of purchase for manipulation while maintaining a relatively narrow overall width that minimizes snagging on gear. The gently swept rear profile also mirrors the original mil-spec design, allowing the hand to naturally disengage after charging without awkward movement.
Compatibility
Compatible with most standard AR-15 upper receivers chambered in 5.56 NATO and similar calibers.
Not compatible with:
- SIG MCX
- Centurion Arms Billet Upper Receivers
Our Thoughts
The ACF is one of the finest charging handles we've used.
Instead of chasing oversized latches or gimmicky features, Forward Controls Design focused on solving real problems: durability, suppressed performance, and ergonomics. The Constant Motion latch system is genuinely innovative, and the enhanced gas fence makes a noticeable difference on suppressed rifles.
We also appreciate that the ACF maintains a relatively compact profile. Oversized charging handles certainly have their place, but for a rifle that's going to be carried, trained with, and relied upon, we prefer the ACF's balanced approach. It offers plenty of purchase without becoming a snag hazard.
If you're building a premium duty or defensive AR, the Forward Controls Design ACF is one of our highest recommendations.
