As LPVOs have become increasingly popular, the scope mount market has exploded.
Along with that has come an ever-growing trend toward taller and taller scope mounts.
After extensive testing, we've come to a different conclusion.
For the overwhelming majority of shooters, we believe 1.54 inches is the ideal optic height.
This height closely matches the lower 1/3 co-witness commonly used on red dot optics, providing a natural cheek weld, fast sight acquisition, and consistent rifle indexing without forcing an unnatural head position.
When shooting with a magnified optic, consistent head placement becomes far more important than it is with a red dot. Raising the scope to 1.70 inches or higher often makes achieving that consistency more difficult, particularly when shooting from improvised positions or under time pressure.
You'll often hear claims that taller mounts are necessary for passive night vision shooting with LPVOs.
In reality, very few shooters are successfully using helmet-mounted night vision behind an LPVO. The limited eye relief and reduced light transmission through the optic make passive aiming through a magnified scope extremely difficult, even at 1x.
If you're using a clip-on night vision device mounted in front of the optic, that's an entirely different application—and a 1.54-inch mount works perfectly well.
We prefer recommending equipment that performs exceptionally in 99% of real-world applications, rather than optimizing for niche scenarios most shooters will never encounter.
