If the Trijicon RMR and SRO had a child, it would be the RMR HD.
It combines nearly everything shooters loved about both optics. You get the bombproof durability and rugged housing that made the RMR the gold standard for duty pistols, while gaining a significantly larger viewing window that feels much closer to shooting an SRO.
Although the window is slightly smaller than the SRO's, it is noticeably larger than the original RMR, making dot acquisition much faster without dramatically increasing the optic's size.
The top-loading battery is another major improvement. Battery changes are quick and easy without removing the optic from the slide or disturbing your zero. The larger side buttons are also much easier to manipulate, especially with gloves or during stressful conditions.
One of our favorite upgrades is the new forward-facing light sensor. Unlike traditional sensors that measure ambient light around the shooter, the RMR HD measures the lighting conditions at the target, allowing the optic to make far more accurate brightness adjustments when using Auto Mode. This is a significant improvement over previous Trijicon designs and one of the standout features of the optic.
The glass has a slight blue tint, which helps maximize battery life while remaining far less noticeable than the original RMR. During normal shooting, the tint is barely noticeable and does not detract from the sight picture.
Like the SRO, the RMR HD includes Auto Brightness, Button Lock Mode, and extensive brightness adjustment options, giving shooters complete control over the optic's performance.
Things to Consider
The protective "horns" that help make the RMR HD incredibly durable also increase the optic's overall height slightly. For shooters carrying appendix inside the waistband (AIWB), these reinforced corners may print a bit more than an RMR or SRO depending on body type, holster selection, and clothing.
For most users, however, this is a small trade-off for the added impact protection and durability.
