Forward Controls Design ABC/R v3 Bolt Catch
The Forward Controls Design ABC/R v3 (Augmented Bolt Catch/Release) is one of the most refined bolt catch upgrades available for the AR-15 platform. Purpose-built for hard-use rifles, the ABC/R improves both ergonomics and functionality by increasing the size and accessibility of the bolt catch paddles without adding unnecessary bulk.
Designed specifically with modern ambidextrous controls in mind, the ABC/R v3 makes locking the bolt open and releasing it faster, more intuitive, and easier to accomplish under stress—even while wearing gloves.

Designed Around Ambidextrous Controls
One of the biggest complaints with standard AR bolt catches is how difficult they become to access once an ambidextrous magazine release is installed.
The ABC/R v3 addresses this by extending and angling the lower paddle, moving it onto a different vertical plane than the magazine release. This makes it significantly easier to identify and activate by feel without accidentally contacting the wrong control.
A small indexing notch above the lower paddle provides additional tactile feedback, allowing your finger to naturally locate the release without taking your eyes off the target.
Improved Reload Ergonomics
The enlarged upper paddle is easier to engage during reloads while maintaining a streamlined profile.
Forward Controls Design offers three upper paddle configurations to accommodate different shooting techniques:
- Forward Biased (FB): Optimized for right-handed shooters using their support-hand thumb to release the bolt.
- Standard: Centered paddle for traditional manipulation.
- Rearward Biased (RB): Designed for left-handed shooters using their trigger finger to activate the bolt catch.
This allows shooters to choose the configuration that best matches their manual of arms.
Built for Duty Use
The ABC/R v3 is precision machined from billet 8620 alloy steel, heat treated, and finished with a premium Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating for exceptional wear and corrosion resistance.
Version 3 also introduces several functional enhancements, including:
- Increased traction ledges on both paddles
- Larger "Butterfly" lower paddle
- Extended magazine follower trip for improved last-round bolt hold open reliability
- Included installation hardware
Every detail reflects Forward Controls Design's commitment to producing components for serious, hard-use rifles.
Compatibility
The ABC/R v3 is compatible with most mil-spec AR-15 receivers.
Not compatible with:
- Colt-pattern 9mm AR receivers using Colt-style bolt catches
- Armalite AR-10B receivers
- Certain CMT-based billet lower receivers due to bolt catch boss geometry
Our Thoughts
The bolt catch is one of the most frequently manipulated controls on an AR, yet it's often overlooked during a build.
The ABC/R v3 is one of those upgrades that immediately feels more intuitive once installed. The enlarged, angled paddles make both locking the bolt open and releasing it easier without becoming oversized or prone to accidental activation. We especially appreciate how well it integrates with ambidextrous magazine releases, solving an issue many enhanced bolt catches simply ignore.
Like most Forward Controls Design products, the ABC/R v3 isn't flashy—it simply improves the rifle through thoughtful engineering and exceptional machining. If you're building a premium AR, this is one of the best bolt catches available.
