Forward Controls Design Reinforced Buffer Retainer (RBF)
The Forward Controls Design RBF (Reinforced Buffer Retainer) is a premium upgrade to one of the smallest—but often overlooked—components in the AR platform. Precision machined from 17-4 PH stainless steel and heat treated to H900 hardness, the RBF is designed to withstand the abuse that can occur from tolerance stacking, out-of-spec components, or high round counts.
Featuring a reinforced tip that is 10% larger than a standard mil-spec buffer retainer, the RBF offers increased durability while maintaining full compatibility with mil-spec receiver extensions and standard installation procedures.

Built to Prevent Common Failures
The buffer retainer is a small part that rarely gets much attention—until it breaks.
On rifles built with parts from multiple manufacturers, tolerance stacking can place additional stress on the buffer retainer. If the tip shears off, the broken piece often ends up inside the lower receiver, potentially jamming the trigger group and rendering the rifle inoperable until repaired.
The RBF addresses this weak point with stronger materials and a reinforced design, offering inexpensive insurance against a surprisingly common failure.
Reinforced Without Compromising Compatibility
Rather than dramatically changing the shape of the buffer retainer, Forward Controls Design retained the traditional round-tip geometry while increasing its diameter by approximately 10%.
This provides greater strength while avoiding timing issues that can occur with oversized or non-round designs. The RBF installs exactly like a standard mil-spec buffer retainer and requires no special fitting.
Premium Construction
Every RBF is Swiss machined from 17-4 PH stainless steel and heat treated to H900 hardness, creating a component that is substantially stronger than standard cast or machined retainers.
It's a small part manufactured to the same uncompromising standards found throughout the Forward Controls Design lineup.
Compatibility
Compatible with:
- Mil-spec AR-15 rifle receiver extensions
- Mil-spec AR-15 carbine receiver extensions
- VLTOR A5 receiver extensions
- PWS Enhanced Carbine Receiver Extensions
Important: The RBF is not intended to correct improperly machined lower receivers with incorrectly located buffer retainer holes. Excessive wear on the front face of the buffer may indicate an out-of-spec lower receiver that should be replaced.
Our Thoughts
The RBF is one of those upgrades that most shooters will never think about—until they experience a broken buffer retainer.
While a properly built AR may never have an issue, we've seen enough rifles assembled from mixed manufacturers to know that tolerance stacking is real. For such an inexpensive component, upgrading to the RBF provides added confidence with virtually no downside.
It's exactly the kind of part we like: simple, thoughtfully engineered, and built to eliminate a known weak point without introducing unnecessary complexity. If you're building a rifle that's intended for duty, defense, or high round-count training, the Forward Controls Design RBF is cheap insurance that's well worth installing.
